PARIS - Iraq's Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki will on Monday hold talks in Paris with French President Nicolas Sarkozy focused on closer cooperation between their two countries, Sarkozy's office said Saturday.

Sarkozy was in Iraq in February on the first visit there by a French president "giving new impetus to relations between France and Iraq", a statement said Saturday.

His visit "opened up perspectives for major cooperation in all fields", it added.

Maliki's visit would be an opportunity to "reconfirm France's full support for efforts by the Iraqi authorities to advance on the path to democracy, reconciliation and reconstruction."

Maliki held talks with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Thursday saying London and Baghdad were launching a "long-term partnership of equals," six years after the US-led invasion of Iraq to oust Saddam Hussein.

The London visit took place on the day the two countries were marking the closing chapter of Britain's combat mission in Iraq.

In Paris Maliki was also expected to meet Prime Minister Francois Fillon.
