The student went missing in Budapest while walking home after a late night out.

BUDAPEST – Hungarian police said Tuesday they had launched an investigation into the disappearance of a French student who went missing in Budapest last week.

"The police in Budapest have opened an inquiry into the disappearance of French citizen Ophelie Bretnacher," spokeswoman Eva Hujber told AFP, adding that a number of witnesses had already been interviewed.

Bretnacher, 22, went missing from Hungary's capital city during the night of 4 December, last Thursday.

She was last seen partying with fellow-students in a disco in the centre of Budapest, according to an online blog dedicated to finding missing people in Hungary.

The site added that she left the club at around 3:00 am and decided to walk home.

Her bag, containing her identity documents and her mobile phone, was found on the Chain Bridge, which crosses the river Danube in the heart of the Hungarian capital.

Bretnacher's family and friends have also launched an Internet campaign to try to find her.
