A French soldier died of a self inflicted gunshot wound an investigation is underway to determine if it was suicide or an accident.

Kabul – A French soldier died in Afghanistan Sunday of a gunshot fired from his own weapon, military officials said, adding that they were investigating whether the death was a suicide or an accident.

The soldier, a sergeant involved in advising and training Afghan troops, was rushed to the US base at Bagram north of Kabul with a gunshot wound to the head but later died, French army spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Bertrand Fayet said.

The soldier was stationed south of Kabul and had recently arrived in Afghanistan, Fayet said. He did not give the soldier's age or identity.

A French soldier was last killed in Afghanistan in March during a skirmish with insurgents in the east of the country and the latest death takes to 28 the number of French troops to have died in Afghanistan since January 2002.

France has some 2,800 troops in Afghanistan as part of a 58,000-strong NATO-led international force.
