French court blocks police monitoring website

A French court on Friday ordered Internet providers to block access to a website aimed at preventing police abuse that publishes pictures of policemen and information about their personal lives.

The court said access to should be blocked "pending a final decision on two complaints", one of which was filed by Interior Minister Claude Gueant for defamation against police officers.

Gueant and the French police union say the website -- inspired by similar sites in the United States -- carries slanderous content against the police force and the administration.

They reminded the court in a hearing on Wednesday that one of the policemen listed on the website had received a hunting rifle cartridge in his letter box.

The website, which could still be accessed hours after the court order, describes itself as a citizens' initiative aimed at "fighting against violence through transparency and information."
