France will donate 100,000 euros to help refugees from Kyrgyzstan and is assessing the humanitarian situation on the border with Uzbekistan, the foreign minister said Wednesday.

The funds (123,000 dollars) will be donated to the International Committee of the Red Cross to help the "victims of the tragic events over the past days in southern Kyrgyzstan," said Bernard Kouchner.

France had earlier sent medical supplies to the strife-torn area, where over 75,000 people have fled ethnic fighting between Kyrgyz and Uzbeks in southern Kyrgyzstan.

Kouchner said in a statement that French diplomats in Tashkent and Bishkek were working with Uzbek and Kyrgyz authorities to carry out an "expert analysis of the situation on the ground".

The mission will help address the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Kyrgyzstan on Wednesday started three days of national mourning for nearly 180 killed in the ethnic bloodletting as a plane carrying the first foreign aid for refugees arrived in Uzbekistan.
