Fijian rugby player Laijiasa Bolenaivalu was on Tuesday sentenced to a year in prison after knocking down two pedestrians while drink driving and without a licence.

The 22-year-old has also been banned from taking his driving test for a year, by a court in the southwestern town of Auch.

Prosecutors had requested two years in prison including one suspended against the player who competed for lower league side CA Perigueux.

The accident occurred during a local festival last October when Bolenaivalu lost control of the car he was driving, mounted a footpath and struck two pedestrians, who suffered serious leg injuries.

Bolenaivalu pleaded guilty and admitted he had consumed alcohol. Both he and another Perigueux player, who was a passenger in the car, were fired by the club.
