Qatar said on Tuesday it supports French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde in her bid to head the International Monetary Fund.

The announcement by the energy-rich Gulf state came through an unnamed official from the ministry of economy and finance quoted by QNA state news agency.

Neighbouring United Arab Emirates on Sunday also said it backed Lagarde's bid to succeed her compatriot Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who resigned on May 18 to fight sexual assault charges in New York.

Lagarde travelled to Saudi Arabia on Saturday as part of her campaign to drum up support for her bid.

She is being challenged only by Mexico's central bank chief Agustin Carstens, after Israeli central bank governor Stanley Fischer's candidacy was ruled out Monday night on account of his being too old.
