The army and Red Cross on Friday rescued 10 people who had been trapped in an avalanche on Lebanon's highest mountain peak, but one person was still missing, the Lebanese Red Cross said.

"Seven of the 11 people who went missing in Qornet al-Sawda turned up at a nearby village on their own, and we are currently in contact with three more who remain trapped but who we hope to reach soon," a Red Cross official told AFP.

"Unfortunately one more person is still missing and we have as yet no sign of him."

An army spokesman earlier told AFP the group included both Lebanese and French nationals.

Located in north Lebanon, Qornet al-Sawda is the country's highest peak at more than 3,000 metres (9,842 feet) above sea level.
