Helicopters from France's Licorne force on Monday renewed air strikes on Ivory Coast leader Laurent Gbagbo's Abidjan residence shortly after joint UN strikes on his positions, a witness told AFP.

Small arms fighting resumed shortly afterwards on the main road below Gbagbo's residence that leads to the hotel that is the headquarters of his rival for the presidency, Alassane Ouattara, the witness said.

"Licorne helicopters overflew the residence area between 10:00 am and 11:00 am (GMT). They fired several missiles into the zone. A large plume of black smoke is rising from around the residence," the inhabitant said.

"Heavy machine-guns targeted one of the helicopters but it was not hit," the witness said.
