Most French still back Mali intervention: poll

Sixty-five percent of French back their country's military intervention in Mali to try to oust Islamists who control much of the country, with 34 percent against, an opinion poll said Saturday.

That was a slight increase in those in favour from a week ago when the offensive kicked off to block the advance of Islamist forces towards the capital from bases in the north, which they have controlled since last April.

The latest poll by IFOP, to be published in the Sud Ouest regional newspaper, questioned 1,005 people by telephone on January 17 and 18.
