A 35-year-old Frenchman died in an avalanche Sunday while on a three-day ski trek in the Alps with a friend, emergency services said.

The two set off the snowslide in an off-piste area in a national park above the town of Pralognan-la-Vanoise, near the Italian border. The avalanche engulfed the man, carrying him a hundred metres (yards) before burying him.

He was quickly recovered thanks to an avalanche detector unit he was wearing but was unable to be revived. His friend escaped unharmed.

Avalanches are common in the French Alps and claim several skiers' lives each winter in off-piste areas.
