French robbers blast their way into an armoured van depot, and opened fire on police officials when confronted.

VALENCE – A well-organised band of French robbers blasted their way into an armoured van depot with explosives Tuesday and opened fire on police with automatic weapons as they made their escape.

The gang blocked police vehicles inside their station car park with a burning vehicle, scattered nails on the road to cover their getaway and sealed off streets around the target of the robbery, in the southern town of Valence.

Only one person was injured, firefighters said, an employee of the Loomis cash delivery company who suffered hearing difficulties after being caught near the scene of the explosion, which severely damaged the building.

Police investigators said it had not yet been established whether the gang had made off with any loot, but added that the sum would not have been great.

Firefighters were at the Loomis depot shortly after the pre-dawn raid, working to make the devastated building safe enough for detectives to begin combing through the wreckage for clues.

The gang fled the scene in powerful vehicles, firing at police for several hundred meters, according to an official with knowledge of the investigation.
