French apartment was ETA explosives lab

LYON, France, Aug 26, 2007 (AFP) - An apartment searched by French anti-terrorist authorities in the centre of the country was an alleged explosives lab for Basque separatist group ETA, a source close to the probe said Sunday.

Investigators, who were still at the apartment in Commelle-Vernay on Sunday afternoon, found documents indicating the location had been used by ETA, the source said.

Testing had revealed the presence of nitric acid, which can be used to make explosives.

The search began Saturday and was expected to continue into Monday.

A car bomb exploded Friday outside a police barracks in Spain's northern Basque region, in what was believed to be the first attack by ETA since the ending of a ceasefire in June.

ETA has been blamed for 819 killings in a four-decade independence campaign for the Basque regions of Spain and southwestern France.
