France will not oppose EU talks with Turkey

PARIS, Aug 27, 2007 (AFP) - President Nicolas Sarkozy said Monday that France will not block negotiations between the European Union and Turkey, but he reiterated his opposition to Turkish membership in the 27-nation bloc.

Sarkozy said the European Union must engage in an "vital reflexion" on its borders as a condition for Turkey to continue talks with the bloc on its possible membership or association.

"If this vital reflexion on the future of our union is launched by the 27 members, France will not oppose the opening of new chapters for negotiation between the Union and Turkey in the months and years to come," he told a conference of French ambassadors.

Sarkozy opposes Turkey's membership in the European Union, arguing that the predominantly Muslim country is not part of Europe.
