Spain and France will next week sign a deal to create two "motorways of the sea," linking Nantes in west France with ports on the Spanish coast, Madrid's public works ministry announced Friday.

MADRID - The routes from Nantes Saint-Nazaire to Gijon in north Spain and Vigo on the northwest coast will take the load off motorways by providing high-speed ferry transport for goods lorries, the ministry stated.

The memorandum will be signed in Paris on February 27 by Spain's Minister of Equipment Magdalena Alvarez and France's junior transport minister, Dominique Bussereau, and each nation will contribute 15 million euros (19 million dollars) to the project.

The statement gave no details on timing, but said that the maritime corridor linking Nantes with Vigo could be extended to Algeciras, Spain's busiest port, which lies in the southeast.
