Question:

I have a collection of indoors orchids. I would like to go for a several months long expedition (in subantarctic islands, actually). Is there any means to make sure that my orchids will still be alive, not to say in a good shape ? Tnak you for your help.

Answer:

Dear Mr. Grant,

That orchids are fragile is an enduring myth; though what is good for one species is not necessarily the best for another. You will know, since you collect orchids, that many hate hard limey water while some others (albeit few) thrive on it. Most benefit from controlled spells of deprivation but it is probably unwise to leave your orchids in inexperienced hands since the reflex generally is to 'kill with kindness' by over watering. I suggest you contact the famous orchid house: VACHEROT & LECOUFLE at BOISSY SAINT LEGER 94471 (a close surburb of Paris) mail : lecoufle@aol.com who will take them as a boarder and give them the very best care during your long absence or alternatively you can ask your local florist shop. This way you can go on your long expedition knowing on your return all your orchid friends will be there for you when you get back.

Best regards
Elaine
