ALMERIA – Taxi drivers held a 24-hour strike Monday to protest against the murder of a colleague.
The body of 53-year-old Joaquin Garcia Carretero, 53, was found on Saturday in Aguadulce in the southern province of Alemeria.
His abandoned taxi was later discovered about 20 kilometres away in another town.
One person has been arrested in connection with the murder and was being questioned by police Monday.
José Hernández, president of the Almeria taxi drivers’ association, said drivers would attend a church service in memory of Carretero.
Drivers were also meeting with government officials to discuss the problems of attacks on taxi drivers.
A number of drivers have been attacked often in exchanges between drunken holidaymakers in the south of Spain.
There have also been reports of a murder of a taxi driver in Barcelona last year.
