Madrid massacre suspect in court in London

21 March 2005

LONDON- A Spanish national accused of playing a part in last year’s deadly Madrid train bombing was appeared in a court in London.

Moutaz Almallah Dabas, 39, a father-of-eight, was detained on Saturday in Slough, southeast England, on an extradition warrant issued by the Spanish authorities.

He is being held by anti-terrorist detectives at Britain’s Scotland Yard and is due to appear at Bow Street magistrates court in central London.

“He is a Spanish national,” confirmed a police spokeswoman.

Spanish counter-terrorism officials said the detainee was the brother of Mohannah Almallah Dabas, a Syrian national who was arrested in Spain on Friday on suspicion of involvement in the Madrid bombings.

Spain suspects both Dabas brothers of involvement in recruiting young Islamic radicals.

In Spain’s worst ever terrorist attack, 191 people were killed on 11 March last year when 10 bombs went off on four trains in Madrid.

The Spanish government is still investigating the blasts and 22 suspected Islamic extremists, most of them Moroccans, are already in jail.
