Judge keeps fans out of football rematch

1 February 2006

MADRID – A court judge ordered a football match to take place on Wednesday night in the absence of fans.

Judge Luis Manuel Ugarte Oterino was asked on Tuesday to rule on a dispute between the Galician football club Deportivo de La Coruna and Valencia in the quarter finals of the Copa del Rey.

Deportivo asked the judge to rule against the finishing of a match which was called off mid-play last Wednesday, 44 minutes into the first half. The referee stopped play when his assistant Carlos Megia Davila had a coin thrown at him from the crowd, which injured his eyebrow.

Deportivo said the final result in the match should be settled by a decision from the disciplinary section of the Spanish Football Federation.

It said it decided to take its complaint to the court when the football body refused to listen and called the rematch.

The judge however upheld the decision to play out the remaining 46 minutes of the game. But he said fans should not be allowed into the Mestalla stadium.
