MADRID – The ombudsman launched an investigation Tuesday into the way mobile telephone bills are compiled amid allegations of price-hikes.
The ombudsman opened the inquiry to “clarify the system” of invoicing used by mobile telephone companies.
The investigation aims to find if people really pay for the minutes that they use their mobile telephones.
Maria Luisa Cava de Llano, head of the Public Defender’s office, has written to the secretary of state for Telecommunications and the Commission for the Telecommunications Industry to tell them of the investigation.
She asked them to give their versions of recent stories in newspapers and on Spanish television about mobile telephone prices, which claimed companies rounded up bills to make more money.
De Llano said if the stories were correct then some companies would be breaking the law by charging people for time when they were not actually talking on their mobile phones.
