Córdoba mosque rafters sell for EUR 1.5M

8 October 2008

MADRID — More than two years after Christie’s suspended the sale of five beams from the Mezqita de Córdoba following protests by the Spanish Church, the London auction house sold the rafters Tuesday for EUR 1.5 million to an unknown bidder represented by Beckford Advisors Limited.

Church authourities, who manage the artistic heritage of the historical mosque, said that the beams were unlawfully taken out of the country, but recently dropped their lawsuit due to a lack of evidence.
