Arrest of USD 1b ‘drugs dealer’

19 February 2004

BARCELONA – A suspected member of the powerful Cali drugs cartel who is wanted in the US for allegedly laundering USD 1 billion was arrested at Barcelona airport, police revealed Thursday.

Agents from the Organized Crime Group carried out the arrest of suspected drug dealer Fernando Antonio Tuesday.

The 63-year-old Colombian was about to get on a flight bound for Bogota when he was detained.

He is said to be a member of the drugs cartel based in the Colombian city of Cali, which is thought to be a major player in the world cocaine market.

Antonio is facing an extradition order to the US where police claim he is a member of the Cali drugs cartel in Colombia.

He is alleged to have laundered USD 1 billion through his involvement in drug dealing between 1982 and 1995.

Antonio is to be sent to Madrid when the authorities will decide if he is to face extradition proceedings to the US.

Police sources refused to disclose if Antonio was travelling alone.

He might have been about to transfer planes but this has not been established.
