ALGECIRAS -  Hundreds of people were left stranded Sunday on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar as strong winds and hurricane-force gusts cancelled ferry traffic between southern Spain and North Africa.

The winds, with gusts exceeding 100 kilometres per hour, follow days of bad weather conditions in the Strait that local officials say have caused millions of euros in damage. Many fishing boats docked at Algeciras and further east of Málaga province have been unable to go out to sea due to the high winds.

Authorities said ferry services will only resume once weather conditions improve.
