Veteran Spanish journalist Carlos Mendo, one of the founders of Spain's leading daily El Pais, died Monday aged 77, the paper said on its website.

It said Mendo passed away after an illness that had kept him in hospital for the past several weeks.

The recipient of numerous journalism awards, he first joined the Spanish news agency Efe after graduation in 1958.

He then worked for the US-based news agency United Press International, first as its correspondent in Rome and then, from 1962, as its bureau chief in Spain.

He was managing director of Efe from 1965 to 1969, a period of expansion for the agency.

He later worked for the Prisa publishing group, where he was part of the team that founded El Pais in January 1972.

In 1979, he was named the London correspondent of the left-leaning daily.
