SANTA MARIA - Rafael Ricardi, a 48-year-old man who was wrongly sentenced by a court for rape, was released conditionally on Saturday after serving 13 years in prison.

Ricardi was convicted after dubious evidence linked him to a series of rapes committed by two men in the Cádiz area.

The rape victim said at the trial that the only thing she remembered about one of her two assailants was that he was cross-eyed, as is Ricardi.

Antonia Alba, Ricardi's lawyer, said that her client is in "very poor shape" and is presently in a "depressive" state. The former inmate will get a physical check-up on Monday as well as visit a psychologist.
