MADRID - Spain's handball team was handed a tough round-two defeat at the European Handball Championships, falling to France 27-28 yesterday.

Despite strong first-half play, a slow second-half start allowed the reigning European Champions to go ahead seven goals (17-23), a margin that Spain could not make up despite having possession to tie with six seconds to play.

The loss makes semifinal qualification difficult for Juan Carlos Pastor's team, although the side also overcame a opening first-round loss to reach the second round.
