MADRID - Just days after he learned his team Astana would be barred from the 2008 Tour de France, Alberto Contador will travel to St. Petersburg, Russia as the only Spanish athlete nominated for a Laureus award, known as the Oscar of sports prizes.

The reigning Tour champion will compete in the World Breakthrough of the Year category in Monday's ceremony, and is up against Serbian tennis sensation Novak Djokovic and F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, among others.

Tennis' Roger Federer is the favourite to repeat in the World Sportsman of the Year award.
