MADRID - Low-cost carrier Ryanair will cancel 500 flights and close its Valencia hub for six weeks in November and December in order to cut costs, the Irish budget airline announced Thursday.

Ryanair's personnel director, Eddie Wilson, said the company has taken the decision after failing to obtain support from regional authorities or local councils to keep flying out of Valencia during the low tourism season.

He also noted that Valencia is among the most expensive airports in Spain for landing slots and therefore it makes little sense for Ryanair to keep using it at a time when it is also coping with soaring fuel costs.

Ryanair is to cease flights into and out of Valencia between November 4 and December 19.

The announcement follows Spanair's decision on Wednesday to lay off 1,100 workers.
