Police said Friday they had broken up the biggest hashish trafficking ring in central Spain, arresting six people and seizing three tonnes of the drug in Madrid's suburbs.

Traffickers hid the hashish in the basements of two homes northwest of the capital and protected it with private alarm systems, police said in a statement.

Police said they caught two of the suspects while they were putting the drugs in vacuum packs.

Officers arrested six people in all, including a 67-year-old man suspected of being the ringleader, as well as seizing the drugs, 5,500 euros ($7,200)in cash, weighing scales and six vehicles.
