MADRID - The Portuguese and Spanish police have rescued kidnapped businessman Pedro Aguirre Ormaechea, who was taken captive on 6 March. The group holding the 62-year-old was demanding a ransom of EUR 11 million.

The victim, who is the vice president of a large distribution company, was found on Thursday in Monte Gordo, Portugal, chained, gagged and with earplugs in his ears, the authorities revealed yesterday.

Aguirre had been lured to a supposed business meeting in Madrid by the gang. A Portuguese woman reportedly appeared at the meeting, inviting him to a hotel "to talk in peace." The gang then set upon him in a hotel room, before forcing him into their car.
