BARCELONA - Five Catalan police agents who were suspended from their posts nine months ago for beating up suspects are back in uniform.

Regional authorities have decided that the Mossos d'Esquadra whose brutal behaviour was captured on video by hidden cameras at Barcelona's Les Corts police station may be readmitted, although their beats have been changed and they will no longer work together.

Four of them were charged with beating a male suspect, while a female agent was accused of slapping a Russian woman whose clothes were also party removed.

Police unions expressed satisfaction at the readmission, but the prosecuting attorney in both cases, Jaume Asens, criticised its logic.

"You can be in favour or against suspension, but it's hard to understand  them  being suspended first, then readmitted," he said.
