MADRID - After a duel between countrymen lasting more than three hours, David Ferrer beat Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Monday to move on to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the first time in his tennis career.

The fifth-seeded Spaniard, who will now face Novak Dkjokovic, was more solid and consistent in his performance throughout the match, which produced some lengthy exchanges, including one lasting 34 hits. Ferrer's victory ensures that there will be two Spaniards in the quarterfinals, with Rafa Nadal due to take on Finnish player Jarkko Nieminen today.
