MADRID - Eight people died and 45 were injured when a packed coach carrying Moroccan workers crashed after a tyre burst near Valencia in eastern Spain, police reported Monday.

The Spanish driver, who died in the accident, lost control of the vehicle which crashed through the central rail and careered across the opposite carriageway before ending up on its side.

Police said the seven dead passengers were all Moroccans returning to Tarragona and Barcelona after taking their summer holiday. The accident occurred at the seaside resort of Oropesa del Mar.

They said one of the bus's front tyres had apparently burst. Passengers reported that the bus had shaken violently before the accident.

The emergency services set up a station in a sports hall in the provincial capital of Castellon.
