The body of a child, apparently bearing a resemblance to a five-year-old German boy gone missing in southern Spain, has been found, a police spokesman said Friday.

Divers, teams with dogs and a helicopter were mobilised Friday near the city of Cordoba as part of a search for the boy, authorities said.

The child was on holiday in the southern Cordoba region with his mother who was found in a state of shock on Tuesday, the civil guard said in a statement.

"The body of a minor has been found in the area where the search was carried out," the spokesman said. "It could be the missing child but we are waiting for his identification."

The body was found at Espiel, a few kilometres (miles) north of Cordoba, around 11:00 am (0900 GMT).

Authorities earlier said the boy's mother whose identity was not given had been found in shock, "disoriented and (with) contusions and scratches as well as obvious signs of dehydration". She was hospitalised.

The woman told the police she left Germany by car with her son about a week ago but she was unable to say what happened later.

Temperatures in the region soar to 40 degrees Celsius (more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit) at this time of year.

Witnesses told police they saw the woman on a fishing trip to the local Puente Nuevo lake on Sunday with her son. Others said she asked residents for help on Monday because her car had broken down.

The car was found late Tuesday near a religious shrine.
