Madrid – The bodies of four Africans were found on a Spanish Mediterranean beach Monday and emergency services were searching for possible survivors from a raft, a regional government spokesman told AFP.

Two men and two women, thought to be of Moroccan nationality were found dead, and another two were injured, one seriously on the beach near the southern port of Cadiz, said a spokesman for the local authority.

They had to swim for shore after the wooden raft on which they were travelling, sank near the Trafalgar lighthouse, 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Cadiz, he added.

Spanish officials fear that many of the thousands who try to reach Spain by sailing in simple boats from north and west Africa die of thirst, hunger or exposure but there is no way of knowing exactly how many.
