BARCELONA - The first ship filled with drinking water destined for drought-stricken Barcelona arrived at the city's port on Tuesday.

The Sichem Defender, which was loaded with water from Tarragona, will be followed by another ship due to arrive on Thursday from Marseilles, France.

A third will arrive on 19 May, thus completing this test period for the system. Should it be successful, the Barcelona port will see 63 such ships arrive each month. The cost of the shipments will be around EUR 22 million per month.
