MADRID -- Police on Friday were investigating the deaths of two young children who died when the minivan they were sitting in caught fire and rolled off a cliff in the central Spanish province of Cuenca.

The children, aged three and five, were left in the nine-seat minivan by their father on Wednesday outside Sustratos Ecológicos Quintanar, a mushroom farm near the town of Quintanar del Rey where he had gone to inquire about a job.

While inside the farm office, the minivan burst into flames, causing the brakes to melt, and sent the vehicle careening off a cliff. The fuel tank subsequently exploded.

The body of one of the children was found in the central section of the van, while the other was in the back, suggesting they may have been trying to escape. Their father, an Ecuadorian man who has lived in Cuenca since 1999, said he had left both of them strapped in to the front seats.

He was questioned by police and has been released without charge while the investigation continues. Police suspect the fire may have been started accidentally, possibly by the children themselves.
