MADRID - Spanish Caisse d'Epargne rider Alejandro Valverde retained the yellow jersey after the second stage of the Tour de France Sunday, despite finishing in 20th place. He holds a one-second lead overall after his victory in Saturday's opening stage.

Norwegian Thor Hushovd finished first in Saint Brieuc Sunday, ahead of Luxembourg's Kim Kirchen, and Germany's Gerald Ciolek.

Earlier, the stage had been dominated by French riders, with Thomas Voeckler and Sylvain Chavanel leading a breakaway pack on the first climb of the stage.

The peloton caught sight of the leading group with three kilometres to go. French time-trial champ Fabian Cancellera attacked the finish line slightly too soon, and Hushovd took advantage to open his account in the 2008 race.
