Spain's flag carrier Iberia said Saturday it has cancelled all flights until Sunday because of a wildcat strike by air traffic controllers.

"Because of the shutdown of Spanish air space due to the wildcat strike by air traffic controllers, Iberia is obliged to cancel all flights until 6am (0500 GMT) Sunday," it said in a statement.

The airline asked passengers not to turn up at airports because its staff would be unable to help them, and urged those already at airports to return home.

Iberia said it would allow flight changes without penalties and would refund flights on affected days.

It urged customers to request flight changes and refunds online or in the following days and weeks, but not to telephone its service centre so as to avoid overwhelming its lines.
