Pope Benedict XVI arrived Saturday in the Mediterranean port city of Barcelona, where he will consecrate Antoni Gaudi's unfinished masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia church.

The 83-year-old pontiff, who began a two-day visit to Spain with a homily at Santiago de Compostela where he called on Europe to turn back to God, landed at Barcelona's El Prat airport.

On Sunday, he will consecrate the city's Sagrada Famila as a Basilica, opening the central nave for daily mass for the first time in the history of the building, under construction since 1882.

Thousands waved Vatican flags in yellow and white, crying "Benedicto" and "Viva el Papa" in the square by Barcelona's cathedral, Santa Eulaliam, hoping to see the pope who will spend the night in the Episcopal Palace.

Children and youngsters carried lighted candles.
