Gas Natural appoints former Spanish PM to its board

Spanish energy group Gas Natural said Friday it had appointed former Spanish prime minister Felipe Gonzalez to its board of directors as an independent advisor.

"His recognition as a global statesman and his deep connection to Latin America make his especially suited to be a member of the board of Gas Natural, a multinational with a long tradition in several South American countries," it said in a statement.

Gonzalez, 68, who served as Socialist prime minister between 1982 and 1996. He owns an undisclosed amount of shares in Gas Natural, the company said.

His appointment to the board of the Barcelona-based company will be ratified at the company's next shareholder general assembly.

Gas Natural posted a net profit during the first nine months of the year of 1.12 billion euros (1.48 billion dollars), a 22.2 percent increase over the same time last year.
