A cylinder bomb exploded at a public swimming pool causing light damage.

Madrid – A small incendiary device went off Thursday at the entrance to a public swimming pool in Spain's northern Basque Country, causing light damage, the Basque interior ministry said.

The device -- made up of a bottle of flammable liquid and a camping gas cylinder -- exploded at around 1:45 am (2345 GMT Wednesday) in the town of Okondo causing a small fire that was quickly put out by emergency services, a spokesman for the ministry said.

Such urban violence, or "kale borroka" in the Basque language, has plagued the northern Basque region for years and is generally committed by nationalist youths close to the armed Basque separatist group ETA.

The young radical separatists who carry out "kale borroka" are "support groups" for ETA and they are the outfit's main source of recruitment, according to Spanish courts.

ETA is blamed for the deaths of 828 people in its decades-long campaign for an independent Basque homeland in parts of northern Spain and southwestern France.

It figures on several terrorist blacklists, including those of the European Union and the United States.
