MADRID – An Afghan man died on Monday after being hit by a warning shot fired by Spanish soldiers during a mission to protect a fuel convoy in Farah-Rud, said a spokesperson for Spain’s Defence Ministry. The soldiers are part of a contingent stationed in the western region of Herat.
The accident occurred around 4pm local time when a Toyota vehicle approached from the other direction toward the convoy, prompting the soldiers protecting the vehicles to fire warning shots in the air and toward the ground. One of the bullets ricocheted off the ground and fatally wounded a man sitting in the back seat of the other car, the Defence Ministry said.
Spain has around 700 troops stationed in Afghanistan under the United Nations-mandated NATO-led mission in that country.
