Two tons of cocaine bound for Spain seized

28 May 2007

MADRID – An investigation by Spanish police led to the seizure in Portugal of 2,200 kilos (4,845 pounds) of cocaine that was en route to Spain from Mexico.

Police said the probe began at the beginning of May, when investigators learned of a Spain-bound container suspected of holding drugs.

After determining that the ship carrying the suspect container was due to make a stop in the Portuguese port of Leixoes, Spanish police got in touch with their counterparts in the neighboring country.

The Spaniards traveled to Portugal and were on hand when Lisbon police opened the container to find nearly 2 1/2 tons of Colombian cocaine.

One person was detained in Portugal in connection with the drugs and the ongoing investigation could lead to further arrests, authorities said in Madrid. EFE
