Three fishermen killed as boat sinks off beach

10 January 2006

ALMERIA — Three fishermen have been drowned after their boat sank off the coast of Almeria.

The tragedy happened off a beach called Los Muertos (the dead) in Carboneras,  Almeria, in southern Spain on Tuesday afternoon.

A fourth fisherman managed to swim to shore by himself, coastguards said.

He was suffering from hyperthermia and was taken to hospital.

The alarm was sounded when coastguards were told that a boat was heading back towards land with four people on board.

Two lifeboats, a naval ship and a helicopter were used to try to save the missing fishermen.

The helicopter crew found the bodies of three fishermen.

Coastguards said the boat had been caught in rough seas off the coast and capsized.
