Three children among five killed in gas blast

11 November 2005

BARCELONA  — A gas explosion killed five people including a baby and two young children in Tarragona.

A mother and her two young children were killed as was a baby and another adult.

Rescuers were hunting for other residents where the explosion took place.

Seven people, including a baby, were also injured, some of them seriously.

The baby later died in hospital and another body, of an adult, was found in the rubble.

The top floor of the four-storey building in the centre of the city was destroyed, and rubble from the facade was falling onto the street.

Authorities said it appeared that the explosion was caused by a leaking bottle of gas.

Many homes in Spain, which do not have mains gas supplies, use bottled gas which has caused a number of fatal explosions.
