Spain urges new UN resolution for ‘post-Kadhafi era’

Spain on Monday called for a new UN resolution to take into account the latest developments in Libya after the fall of Moamer Kadhafi, the foreign and defence ministers said in a statement.

Madrid “backs an urgent meeting of the Contact Group on Libya with the participation of the new Libyan authorities, so their priorities and immediate projects can be known,” said ministers Trinidad Jimenez and Carme Chacon.

The Contact Group is composed primarily of countries that participated in the NATO air campaign in Libya.

Libya Resolution 1973 that the UN Security Council passed in March essentially authorised military action to protect the Libyan people and facilitate the humanitarian effort.
