MADRID-Spain’s deputy prime minister said the time for silence over domestic violence had ended.
Marking the international day against domestic violence, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega defended women’s rights.
Sixty-one women have been murdered this year in Spain as a result of domestic violence.
Speaking in the Congress, the upper house of Spain’s parliament, Fernandez de la Vega defended the Socialist government’s planned new law to crackdown on violence against women.
The new law will introduce tougher penalties for offenders, provide better protection for victims and form a specialised judiciary to deal with the issue.
Fernandez de la Vega said she wanted to dedicate her message to “all those women who are the victims of violence and whose dignity and liberty are harmed because of their sex.”
She said in her opinion the time for “silence over this issue has ended and now the moment has arrived to exercise our rights as people”.
“We will not tolerate anything which does not allow the autonomy of women.”
