Portuguese police make major cannabis haul

Police seized more than three tonnes of cannabis on a beach in southwest Portugal, arresting a Spaniard, officers said Tuesday.

A team patrolling the coast of the Aljezur region late Monday discovered several people unloading drugs and recovered 3.4 tonnes of cannabis.

They arrested one suspect, a Spanish man aged 68, while the others fled, said police chief Joao Silva.

Officers, who used night cameras in the operation, also seized a boat and two vehicles.

Cannabis seizures, usually from north Africa, are common on Portugal’s beaches.

In February police recovered two tonnes of the drug in Albufeira in the southern Algarve region.
