Police detain Briton wanted for rape

MADRID – Spanish police announced they had detained a 60-year-old British man who is accused of raping three minors and a pregnant woman in Britain in the late 1970s.

The man, identified as Michael Anthony D., was detained in the southern Mediterranean coastal city of Cartagena where he now lives, police said in a statement.

He is accused of 30 counts of rape and sexual assault of three underage girls as well as of a pregnant woman between 1976 and 1979 in the town of Penwortham in central England and was the subject of a European arrest warrant.

Two other foreigners living in Spain and wanted in their home countries, a Czech and a Dutch national, have also been detained by police, the statement added.

Police in Barcelona detained 31-year-old Jiri K. who is wanted in the Czech Republic for robbery and the destruction of a kiosk in the town of Kraslice near the German border.

Police in Valencia meanwhile detained Dutch national Harm Jan D. who is accused of trafficking large quantities of hashish in the Netherlands. His age was not given.
